Wilbur “Bill” Morris Jackson was born on September 26, 1937 to Allen and Josephine Jackson in Sarasota Florida. He grew up in a loving family with both of his parents and older brother Clarence and older sister, Allean. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law Delores Ann. He attended Sarasota Public Schools graduating from Booker T. Washington High School in 1955. After graduating he attended Tennessee State University where he earned his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Political Science. While a student at Tennessee State Wilbur became involved in the legendary Civil Rights Sit-Ins movement as a part of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC ).

After completing his degree at Tennessee State, Wilbur enlisted in the United States Army where he went on to serve his country honorably for the next two years until his discharge in 1962. Wilbur began his teaching career in Buford, South Carolina. He later moved to Chicago, Illinois where he began his teaching career in the Chicago Public School System. In 1974 he earned his Master’s Degree in Inner City Studies at Northeastern Illinois University. After over 30 years of teaching primarily high school “At-Risk” students Wilbur saw a way to take an early retirement from the Public-School System and quickly took advantage of the opportunity. After retiring from the School District Wilbur dedicated the rest of his life to his church, his friends, and his family.

On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, Wilbur was called to his heavenly home. He leaves behind his sister, Allean Phipps; nieces, Renita (James) Beene, Teresa (Andre) Williams, Melissa ( William) Mitchell, Temesha Phipps; and his only nephew, Reginald Phipps. He also leaves several great nieces, a great nephew and a host of cousins and friends. He will be greatly missed.
