Born on September 07, 1949 in Chicago, Illinois. Melvin grew up with a natural kindness and boundless energy that would define his life. He was the son of the late James and Edna (Williams) Herbert.
Melvin served his country during the Vietnam War in the United States Marine as a machine gunner. There he earned the Good Conduct Medal of Honor, Marine National Defense Service Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal and Rifle Marksman Badge. Later he with his Late wife Emma (Parker) Herbert and their five daughters’, he spent his years working for the United States Postal Service until Retirement. He loved woodworking and carving as well as painting.
Melvin is survived by his children, Merilyn Herbert-Ahmed, Thomanesa Herbert, Latonya (Morris) Anderson, Melvina Herbert, and his grandchildren, Antione, Raven, Rasheeda, Dwight, Kasuem II, Deovoni, Steven III, Marcus, Diamond, Maurice, Antiono and Morris Jr ; His Great Grandchildren Sole, Antione Jr, Anthony, Mischun, Dante Jr., (Twins) Zamir and Zakari, Amiri and Starlyn.
He leaves behind his siblings, Florine (Lil-ma), Ruthie, Robert, Darlene ( Dee-Dee), Donna (Red), Leon, Kathy (Cookie), Onella and Richard (Ricky). He also leaves behind countless nieces, nephews, as well as extended family members and dear friends who will forever remember his kindness, wisdom, and infectious smile.
He is preceded in death by his late wife Emma Herbert, his Mother Edna Herbert, Father James Herbert, Daughter Starlyn Herbert , Grandsons Kasuem Jr. and Rakim (Twins) , Great Grandson Zuriel Ahmed, Sisters Diane,Annette, Slyvia, Sandra, Lorriane (Pasty), Rosie, Corrine, Brothers James (Boo), Larry, Lacy and Nephew Melvin with whom he is now reunited with in eternal peace.
